the continuation of Bowers Street as it winds down the Palisade cliff, and you walk with the companionable ghosts of horse-drawn carriages, men in bowler hats and women who’ve just stepped off the Paterson Plank trolley. Of the vast network of cut-stone streets laid out in the mid-19th century only five remain, and Holland Street, according to John Gomez of the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy, is the "jewel" among them, unlike any other in its type of stone and patterning.

On April 23rd the City Council voted 7-0 in favor of placing Holland Street on the Jersey City Municipal Register! The designation of Holland Street as a Jersey City Historical Landmark will help insure that the cobblestone roadway will remain undisturbed. Out of the five remaining cobblestone streets in Jersey City, Holland Street is the finest example of this type of road construction and the first to receive landmark status. Over the past three years the dedicated efforts of many neighborhood residents and others through out Jersey City have shown what a committed community effort can achieve. All of Jersey City will benefit in the preservation of Holland Street not only as a wonderful example of a past era of road construction, but with its new future will provide everyone who visits a slice of Jersey City history. RNA and Save the Palisades would like to thank Mayor Glenn Cunningham for his continual support of Holland Street, the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy for the inspiration they provided and the City Council members for their vote of historical designation.
